Happy New Year!

Baby Bestiary 2026 Calendar Update

by Samuel Langford on January 23, 2026

Phew, how is it already the end of January? Thought it was a good time to post an update on this year's calendar, now that the process is nearing the end.

This year's Baby Bestiary 2026 calendar has shipped out to backers, and is available for purchase on the site, so if you haven't yet picked up a copy, you can still get one!

This Year's Calendar

Each year we sponsor a different artist to illustrate our annual Baby Bestiary calendar. This calendar is dedicated to showing off our favorite tabletop creatures in their cutest form.

This year, we look to Video Game Nostalgia to bring your our favorite video games, new and old, with a little bit of a Baby Bestiary twist. We hope you like it and can join us on our adventure! We'd always LOVE to see your photos and hear your thoughts.

This years illustrator is Koit Paales, who has done recent work with the Baby Bestiary and Metal Weave Games, as the designer of some of our favorite pins, and Hyper Light Drifter RPG pixel art!

You can see more of their work at https://www.artstation.com/koitpaales

How it came together

For the art nerds out there, here's some info on how it all came together.

For our first piece we did, our Legend of Hoot-Screech! Our core inspiration is, of course, the retro Legends of Zelda games (this one is Minish cap), but all of Game Boy Advanced games were great.

This was the image that was coming to mind of what I was envisioning, in that our character would be front and center, doing something.

So to start off, we began with some sketches

Then we needed to figure out aspect ratio for the calendar page size.
Then Koit did his magic and his first color pass, and things were looking pretty great.
We did a little bit of a drill down in the weapon equipment icon in the top right, focusing on the owlbears paw as your weapon. I felt like the open paw was more readable from a distance.

Then for the secondary item, we went with some berries and decided on a currency. As gems didn't make sense, we decided on golden acorns (a worthy woodland creature currency, sure you'll agree).
Then it was time to decide on our color palette and we also moved the icons, because the UI was taking a lot of space and moved things to better fit a calendar view.
The extremes made it easier to fall back, but between top left and middle right,

I did like the additional grass detail that was coming through (part of it was that color swaps were making some disappear which led to some confusion when picking swatches).

But, all together we landed on this beauty as our final!!
Thank you all for your support, and for helping us bring this calendar to life once again with another successful year. Maybe we'll do another deep dive into the art process again soon for one of the other months.
